Green Tips

Green Tip #1 Eat Vegan Twice a Week

So– you want to do your part to save the environment but don’t want to sacrifice too much? I hear ya! I’m an American in a consumerist epoch–that’s how we got ourselves into this mess in the first place. This column will feature regular tips to help you slowly develop a more sustainable, less destructive lifestyle. While some of the things I’ll feature are pretty mainstream, the goal will be to introduce green living tips that stem from Christian thought and practice.

I thought I’d start with one that our family is pretty good at. We eat a mostly vegan diet just over half the year. The other half–we live it up. We’re Eastern Orthodox Christians and follow the fasting schedule set by the Church. Click here to listen to a podcast I did about Orthodox fasting.

By following this ancient Christian tradition, we reduce our carbon footprint and are engaged in a spiritual practice that helps us grow in our faith. It’s a win win for the planet and our souls.

If this still sounds like a lot, consider eating vegetarian meals one day a week. Christian history points to Wednesdays (they day Judas betrayed Jesus) or Fridays (crucifixion) as good days to abstain from rich, heavy foods and focus on prayer.
